Not The Creative Type?
I’m re-reading one of the most influential books of my life. Which is saying a lot, because I’ve read a lot of books, lol!
The reason Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way – A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity” affected me so profoundly is because I was one of those people who always insisted that “I’m not creative” and “I don’t have an artistic bone in my body”. The truth is, we are ALL creative and that can take as many shapes and forms as your mind and heart can imagine. It’s not limited to painting, acting, or drawing. In fact, when we start to look at creativity more holistically, we realize that our lives become our work of art.
This book has some practices that have helped me unearth my creativity in several forms, start to write, and find my authentic voice. This will be the 4th time I read this book cover-to-cover because I really need to remember the principles I learned here so I don’t deprive myself of what feels so good to me. When I go huge periods without writing, I feel like I’m actually going to implode.
This is basically a 12-week course where you read a chapter a week, and then do the homework assignments associated with it which are basically answering fun, compelling questions at the end of each chapter. The lessons build on one another each week, it doesn’t require more than an hour total a week, and it doesn’t feel like “work” at all. Trust me, I can turn ANYTHING into work, and this is just flat our enjoyable because you will reconnect with parts of yourself that have either been buried, or never even recognized in the first place. It’s like sitting down with an old friend and remembering the things you have forgotten about yourself that you need to remember again.
I love this quote by Carl Jung because we can apply it to having certainty in any area of our lives. When we know something without a shadow of a doubt, it’s manifestation is inevitable.
As it applies to our artistic lives, Cameron writes, “Creativity is an experience – a spiritual experience. It does not matter which way you think of it: creativity leading to spirituality or spirituality leading to creativity. In fact. I do not make a distinction between the two. In the face of such experience, the whole question of belief is rendered obsolete. As Carl Jung answered the question of belief late in his life, “I don’t believe I know”. #juliacameron #theartistsway #morningpages #theartistsdate #creativity #spirituality #discovery #recovery #remember
