The Evolution and Growth of “Kindness Matters”
“Kindness Matters” started as a movement in Fairfield, CT to make a difference in the lives of others. It was inspired by my children. It was a way to show them that moment-to-moment, we can always choose kindness toward ourselves and others.
This movement has evolved and grown over the years, and I have decided to incorporate the Kindness Matters initiatives into my larger mission now known as The Kindness Solution. If we work to create and cultivate cultures of kindness then we will start to see the ripple effects at home, at school, within our workplaces, online and in our communities. I truly believe that kindness is the solution to every challenge we face as individuals and as a culture.
We have a responsibility as parents, teachers, students, coworkers and citizens to encourage, respect and honor each other’s differences. The qualities that make us unique are our gifts, and some might even see them as our superpowers.
It’s imperative for us all to be aware and truly understand and embrace the fact that there is never, ever a scenario where it’s acceptable to do the following as a misguided way to feel secure, powerful or significant:
- Tear someone else down
- Discourage or create self-doubt in another person
- Make fun of, embarrass, humiliate or shame another person
- Be intolerant or unaccepting of others differences
- Say anything hateful or hurtful that would damage another person’s spirit & self-esteem
- Engage in violent or aggressiveness toward another human being or suggest that one do harm to themselves
Children, tweens, teens, and adults need to understand that any of the above “bullying” behaviors can lead to a lifetime of struggle, suffering, poor self-esteem, mental illness, and heart-wrenchingly senseless suicides in the worst case scenarios.
We need to come together as parents, educators, and leaders to teach young people to be stewards of one another’s spirits, and to never cause emotional or physical harm in any way.
Teaching kids to be leaders of their own lives first, through kindness, empathy, and compassion undoubtedly has the best chance of improving our world for the better.
We are committed to creating on-going dialogues around kindness, and sharing or implementing ideas in our families, schools, and workplaces to empower each other through leadership that is inspired by believing in each other, building each other up, and being committed to each others’, health, happiness and thriving success while achieving our potential individually and collectively.
I hope you’ll be part of The Kindness Solution, and our collective efforts to create and cultivate cultures of kindness!
