Paleo, Gluten-Free, Vegetarian, Vegan, Flexitarian, Mediterranean, Whole 360, Keto, Blood Type, Raw Foods…OMG!
I studied over 100 dietary theories at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and it’s enough to make you crazy! You read about one diet, and it makes 100% sense, until your friend tells you about a diet she is following that she has dropped serious LBS. But then a colleague tells you about the seminar he attended by a leading doctor about the latest research on the most recent diet he is following and he is feeling fabulous and full of energy…..and they all contradict one another!
The reality is, no one diet works for everyone. Each person has individualized nutritonal needs. There is no one-size-fits-all way of eating. Experiment with different foods and see how you feel when you eat them. Use common sense. Trust yourself. It’s doesn’t have to be that complicated!
As Michael Pollan so simply reminds us,”Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”
By “food” Pollan means real food, not creations of the food-industrial complex (“edible food-like substances”). Real food doesn’t have a long ingredient list, isn’t advertised on TV, and contains ingredients you can pronounce.
All-or-nothing / black-and-white approach to one mode of eating is unsustainable for most. If you say you are giving up a certain type of type of food indefintiely, it’s almost certain that you will find yourself eating that forbidden food within a week of that declaration!
Giving our power away to “experts” causes us to dismiss our inherent intuition as to what our unique bodies need to thrive. Develop an intimate relationship with your body and get curious. It’s the best laboratory to experiment and connect with your own bio-indivuality.
As the Founder of IIN, Joshua Rosenthal, says, “Sometimes it takes a million dollars in funding and years of research for scientists to prove what we already know.”
No need to take a dogmatic approach. Listen to your body and do what feels good and makes sense to you.
